IMPLANTS & BRIDGES
Sometimes a tooth just can’t be saved. When this happens, it’s good to have a plan. We recommend not leaving spaces open in your mouth, as it allows your remaining teeth to shift, diminishes function with eating, and encourages bone loss.
YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS IF:
You are in good health
You have healthy gums
You have enough bone to anchor the implants in the jaw
You are committed to taking care of the implanted teeth with regular brushing and flossing
Dental implants are metal posts that are surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath your gums to provide stable support for artificial teeth. Some people who have lost bone in their jaw can still get implants, but first the bone must be augmented with a bone graft. Dentures and bridges mounted to dental implants won’t slip or shift in your mouth, which will make you feel more comfortable and confident about eating and speaking. After receiving implants, regular follow-up visits are important.
YOU ARE A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A BRIDGE IF:
You lost a tooth and the teeth on each side already have crowns
You have a complicated medical history and have trouble healing
You have a bone defect, and a bridge would make more aesthetic sense
A bridge is a way to replace a lost tooth using multiple crowns to span the gap between remaining teeth. This semi-permanent fixture is typically made of porcelain over metal and fits over existing teeth. Bridges can solve the same problems as implants, and is an alternative option for patients, depending on their particular needs and circumstances. A few appointments at our office are typically required for adjustments and fittings, with a final appointment to have the bridge cemented permanently. With proper care, a bridge can last for years.
